3x Lakers Champion Warns Franchise By Signing Luka Doncic

Former 7 x NBA champion Robert Horry has warned the Lakers to keep an eye on Mavs star Luka Doncic.

Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor addressed this rumor recently when he said that LA is “looking at Luke in the future”, but it will obviously depend on how things go in Dallas over the next few seasons.

O’Connor continued his argument by saying, “The Lakers not trading their future is obviously thinking long term right now.”

Doncic is the favorite to win the MVP in 2024-25, but Horry still thinks signing him should be avoided, especially if the Lakers can only do it at the end of the contract with the Mavs.

“You have to think about this, how old will Luke be,” said Horry on the site The Big Shot Bob podcast. “…He’s not the best defensive player right now, and that’s the Lakers’ problem. You have to have athletic guys who can play defense, and Luka, he can score the best of all, but we also know that you have to take the beers out of his hand because he’s not always going to be in good shape. He will be nice, but he won’t be what you need maybe. “

Doncic is currently under a five-year, $215 million contract with the Mavs, so he will remain there through the 2026-27 season. His final year has a player option.

In the 2023-24 season, the Slovenian champion led the NBA in scoring with an average of 33.9 points per game, along with 9.2 rebounds and 9.8 assists.

He’s the reason the Mavericks made it to the NBA Finals, but he ran out of gas once the franchise got there. It didn’t help that Kyrie Irving, drafted, made it to the finals.
