RESULT: Sergey Lipinet defeated Robbie Davies Jr by a 10 round decision in Plant City, Florida. The scores came in at 96-91 (Brian Garry), 98-89 (Joanne Richard) and 95-92 (Joe Ware). He was knocked down three times, Liverpool’s Davies Jr hit well if he wasn’t put in the sails. This was a must win for both men.
IMPORTANT TIMES: Davies Jr had a nosebleed in the second round, which would later become a feature. After hurting Lipinet with a left hook to the jaw at the end of the third round, he was taken out of the attack in the fifth round.
Davies Jr was knocked out twice in the eighth round as Lipinet hunted the body. Unbelievably, the Englishman went back to rock Lipinets at the end of the same round.
RECORDS: Lipinet improves to 18-3-1 (13 KOs), while Davies Jr drops to 23-5 (15 KOs).
TALKING POINTS: It would be hard to ask of Davies Jr, who is traveling to America to face a tough world champion. Coming off the back of Darragh Foley’s tough loss to a serious ankle injury, Robbie fought in his best position with a broken nose.
Lipinet is probably too young to challenge the better guys at welterweight. His opposition to boxing is also in question, as has been mentioned many times here.
Since its inception, Pro Box has done a great job of finding undefeated prospects, top contenders, and guys tasting world title action, bringing them together and matching them up. The result was beautiful, reliable pieces.
QUOTABLE: Great quote from the night before the fight, when Robbie Davies Jr said he couldn’t go home without victory. It shouldn’t have been at his party.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT: All in all, it was a great fight. Despite the saloon’s last-chance nature, both men walked away with credit. Davies Jr could still find himself in the mix at home or in America as a B-side following his efforts. Despite the win, Lipinet is probably still in the same situation.
SUPPORTING CAST: Fernely Feliz (8-0, 6KOs) defeated Cesar Navarro (11-2, 9KOs) at heavyweight by scores of 78-74 and 79-73 twice.
Los Angeles-based Mongolian Tsendbaatar Erdenebat (10-0, 5KOs) defeated Alberto Mercado (17-7-1, 4KOs) at lightweight in the third round. The doctor found the cut on Mercado’s left eye (caused by the beating) too bad to continue.
At super-featherweight, Robert Meriwether III (6-0, 2KOs) defeated Mexico’s Victor Manuel Lopez Gala (5-1, 3KOs) by a score of 60-54 across the board.
Welterweight Terrence Williams (6-0, 5KOs) scored a stunning first-round KO against Jonathan Ariel Sosa (7-17-2, 4KOs).
