Mateo Kovacic is considering leaving Man City during the January transfer window

Man City midfielder Mateo Kovacic is said to be considering his future at the Premier League champions following the arrival of Ilkay Gundogan from Barcelona during the summer transfer window.

The Manchester club secured the return of their former captain as part of a free transfer as Barcelona sought to clear the German star’s salary from their books in order to sign new La Liga signing Dani Olmo.

The 33-year-old is a Man City legend and once he gets up to speed, he is expected to get more minutes from Pep Guardiola.

Knowing this, Kovacic is believed to be worried about his future in City’s starting 11 and if he sees his minutes reduced in the coming weeks, the Croatian star could consider a January move, reports Football Insider.

The 30-year-old has started all three of Man City’s Premier League games and had a disappointing opening weekend against former club Chelsea.

The report states that Guardiola would not be willing to let Kovacic leave in the middle of the season, so, if the player is to leave, it would be during the summer transfer window of 2025. Saudi Arabian clubs are interested in the Man City star. but the player is expected to stay at the Etihad Stadium for now.

Could Mateo Kovacic leave Man City in January?

Mateo Kovacic will get more minutes at Man City

Although Kovacic’s minutes will decrease once everyone is fit and ready to contribute this season, the 30-year-old will still get significant action given the amount of football Man City have played during the campaign.

Although a non-starting role will not satisfy the former Chelsea star, he is still involved in one of the best teams in the world and has a guaranteed title in the 2024/25 season.

It would not be wise for Kovacic to leave the Manchester club in the middle of the season and therefore, he should see how the campaign plays out and make a decision about his future next summer.
