The NBA has announced a significant expansion of the Coaches Challenge rule, when it reviews off-limits violations for the 2024-25 season.

The league’s board of governors approved the move at its meeting in New York, after it was unanimously recommended by the league’s competition committee.

The league explains:

“Under the new rule, if a quick replay foul is caused by a Coach’s Challenge, the court officials and the Replay Center will be able to review the video to determine if a close foul should exist. you have been called. Factors to be considered in determining whether an undisclosed error is close to a violation are below:

  • Whether players involved in an uncalled foul are equal or different than those involved in an out-of-bounds violation is not reviewed.
  • The distance between an unspecified error and an out-of-bounds violation is reviewed.
  • Time passed between the unspoken evil and the out-of-bounds violations being reviewed.”

The NBA has set an example of how the rule will change the game from last season.

“In this game, the Dallas Mavericks challenged the decision given to the Minnesota Timberwolves for possession following a boundary violation. When the game was reviewed, although Dallas guard Kyrie Irving made illegal contact with the left arm of Minnesota forward Jaden McDaniels, the officials and the Replay Center correctly determined that the ball was finally touched by McDaniels, ruling that the Mavericks’ challenge was successful as well. given to Dallas. Under this new rule, Dallas’ challenge will fail, a personal challenge on Irving will be called and Minnesota will either contribute or shoot free throws if the Mavericks are penalized.”
