ENG v AUS 2024, ENG vs AUS 1st T20I Match Report, September 11, 2024

Throw it In England won the toss and elected to bowl first vs Australia

Matthew Short is back from paternity leave and will open the batting in the first match of Australia’s third T20I against England at the Utilita Bowl near Southampton. Australia opted to leave out Jake Fraser-McGurk — who managed 0, 16 and 0 in their 3-0 sweep of Scotland — at Short for opening closer Travis Head instead.

Short was not expected to arrive in England until the ODI leg of the tour which starts next Thursday. But the early arrival of his first child and his partner helped him leave ahead of schedule, with the opportunity to fill the opening left by David Warner’s retirement following the T20 World Cup in June.

Josh Hazlewood also returned to the side, as Mitchell Marsh was flagged on Tuesday, while Cooper Connolly dropped out following his exit from Edinburgh. Xavier Bartlett will share the new ball, replacing all-rounder Aaron Hardie.

England announced their squad 24 hours before the toss, featuring internationals Jacob Bethell and Jordan Cox, and the first T20I cap for Jamie Overton, who is playing as a specialist batsman as he continues his recovery from a back injury.

Phil Salt will captain England for the first time and keep wicket, while Jos Buttler is missing with a calf injury. Buttler is in the squad and looking to make a comeback in time for the five-match ODI series. “When I was growing up it would have been a dream to think that one day I would be asked to be the captain of my country and I couldn’t be prouder to get this opportunity,” Salt wrote in his program notes.

Salt chose to send Australia, suggesting that chasing teams usually enjoy more success in the Utilita Bowl and explaining the fact that the field spent an hour under cover, due to heavy rain that delayed the toss and start by 15 minutes.

Before the toss, two young participants from the Hampshire High School lit up 1,044 newly installed solar panels, installed as part of the team’s partnership with energy company Utilita, a new local sponsor. David Mann, chief executive of Hampshire, said the initiative underlines their commitment to being “the greenest international cricket ground”.
