Survey: Which NBA teams spend the most on star players?

In a league where star power largely determines results, money is spread more evenly among players than you might expect.

Over the past 20 years, All-Star players (about 5 percent of the players in any given NBA season) have received only 16.59 percent of the league’s total salaries. For All-NBA players (15 per year), the number would be 10.37 percent.

But which teams spend the most money on these star players?

We tried to find out by focusing on the All-NBA selections of the last twenty years (since we have 30 teams in the league).

Unsurprisingly, the Los Angeles Lakers topped the list, spending $792.7 million on All-NBA players — 30.61 percent of their total payroll. Interestingly, they rank 29th in spending on non-NBA players.

Surprisingly, the small-market Oklahoma City Thunder ranked second, investing $484.8 million in All-NBA talent. They are also ranked last in the cost of non-players. A prime example of resource allocation in action right there.
