There is probably no golfer in the world who hasn’t been blessed with watching random golf advice on social media. And while handicap players like you or I may be guilty of it, many of us think that professionals are immune to the draw of online golf instruction.
Well, not really – at least for great champion Darren Clarke.
In the video below (courtesy of the PGA Tour Champions Twitter account), the always entertaining Clarke jokes about how he found himself going down the black hole of golf tips on Instagram. As any golfer would, he didn’t just digest the advice, he then asked how it would actually work for him – leading Clarke to a strange reception.

Admitting that the video was about “rolling [the club] and I went down,” Clarke said. There’s one big problem with the order — it might not work for a 56-year-old like him.
“The problem with that is, I’m 56, I’m a bit old and my hips aren’t fast enough,” joked Clarke. “All young children can do it, so, for some people, it works. But for most people, it doesn’t work.”
Clarke admits that trying to emulate what she saw on Instagram wouldn’t have worked for her – but it led her to revisit the curves that suited her frame.

“I always sit on top of the golf ball, so when the little kids change their hips again [shallow the club]I can’t do that. I can’t,” he adds. “For me, it’s about lifting the club and putting it in my hands – or, if anything, out of my hands. [where the club’s parallel to the ground] to be able to rotate, as I’ve always been a barrel boy.”
Because of this, Clarke tends to cover the ball higher by swinging downwards – causing the club to come out in front of him as he comes through impact – rather than how smaller, bigger golfers might do it with more hip.
While both techniques are effective ways to hit the golf ball, Clarke uses some self-deprecation about listening to golfers on social media for swing tips.
“I’m an idiot for listening to all these so-called savvy people on Instagram — and there are a lot of them — but for me, it didn’t work, I’m too old,” he says.
Hey, with the amount of golf tips available on social media, Clarke’s admission is a reminder that not everything you see online is good for your game.
