Pakistani women miss out on daily allowances in the training camp

The Pakistan women’s team did not receive their daily allowance during their ongoing practice in Multan, which began on September 1. The women’s team, which is in camp ahead of Pakistan’s three-match T20I against South Africa next week, will receive allowances when the series begins. .

But this decision points to a change in the principle of how the grant structure was decided in the previous camps, and it is different from the way it is handled in the men’s national team.

In the past, ESPNcricinfo understands that the women’s team received limited daily allowances in training camps. However, this time, PCB provides accommodation and three meals to the camp members; in previous camps, three meals a day were not provided. A PCB official told ESPNcricinfo that the board’s policy is that if three meals a day and hotel accommodation are provided, no daily allowances will be given.

In theory, that’s always true on the male side, too, but it’s rarely, if ever, used. During the recent men’s training camp, which was ahead of Pakistan’s Test series against Bangladesh, the players were given daily allowances in addition to accommodation and any food provided. However, the three free full meals were not made available for free, and the allowances are considered compensation instead. In camps over the years, the male side is almost always given daily allowances, usually with up to two free meals.

It is not clear why this change in food and allowance programs has not been enough for the women, who have seen a decrease in the returns provided to the training camps. At the Pakistan women’s camp in early April in Karachi, before the start of their home white-ball series against the West Indies, three full meals and daily cash allowances were given to all participants. After that, however, the PCB realized that it was offering a refund of the excess amount on the requirements if three full meals were served.

ESPNcricinfo understands that the policy change has left a number of women players disappointed, with some believing that living away from home due to camp eligibility is more than just meeting the basic daily needs of accommodation and food. There were hopes that this would be okay in future camps, as the women’s team is preparing for the Women’s T20 World Cup, which will be held next month.

This situation comes at a time when PCB’s cost ratio in other forms of the game is very high, especially in the form of stadium development which is believed to cost PCB tens of billions of dollars. The Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore is being rebuilt almost from scratch, and the National Stadium in Karachi has also been renovated. There is some construction work to be done at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium and, as the PCB prepares to host the Champions Trophy in 2025, the first ICC event they are scheduled to host in nearly three decades.
Meanwhile, the ongoing Champions One-Day Cup, a domestic 50-over tournament, has also had a huge amount of money. In this tournament, PCB will be given an amount of PKR 49 million, almost ten times more than what was given last year, and half of the money released by PSL at the beginning of this year. The coaches of the five teams – all ex-cricketers – are also paid huge salaries – about PKR 5 million per month on three-year contracts that will cost the PCB about PKR 900 million in consultant salaries.
Central and domestic women’s contracts are also yet to be finalized and announced. Last year, 19 women were given intermediate contracts from August 1 2023, which would be valid until June 30, 2025. However, they would be evaluated at the end of the first 12 months, and another six weeks have passed since that evaluation date. and any pending contract revisions. The average men’s contracts, too, are well past their due date, and although they are expected now, there is no official word on when the changes will be announced.
