In a repeat of the 20025 and 2007 Champions League finals, Liverpool face Italian giants Milan in Europe’s premier competition on Tuesday.
It is Arne Slott’s first Champions League game as Liverpool head coach and the Dutchman will be looking to see a significant improvement from the 1-0 home defeat at Nottingham Forest. Having won their first three games of the season in impressive fashion, the weekend served as a real check for the Reds.
Milan have made a good start to the 2024/25 campaign with just one win in their opening four games under new coach Paulo Fonseca. However, that victory came in their latest outing, with four goals in the first half an hour to secure a comfortable victory over Venezia.
Liverpool and Milan have a lot of history dating back to the noughties, with two Champions League finals, but their most recent meetings came in 2021/22. Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp’s side won two group stage meetings, including a thrilling 3-2 win at Anfield.

There are plenty of familiar faces for Liverpool fans to look out for on Tuesday at the San Siro. There are five former Chelsea players in Milan’s squad – Tammy Abraham, Alvaro Morata, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Fikayo Tomori – while Emerson Royal is another with Premier League experience.
Milan also have risks to deal with. Ismael Bennacer is missing in the middle of the park while Marco Sportiello and Alessandro Florenzi are also absent, while Malick Thiaw is a major doubt.

Injuries haven’t been a challenge for Slot so far but a regular midweek trip will certainly test his side’s fitness. However, the Dutch coach is without Harvey Elliott, who broke his leg in England’s Under 21 team during the September break.
The slot could make changes to the team that lost 1-0 to Forest at the weekend, with Cody Gakpo and/or Darwin Nunez joining the Milan line-up. There could be at least one change in the midfield, too.

Milano’s slow start to the season was boosted by a 4-0 win at the weekend but they are still in transition. Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat at Forest suggests there will be problems in the slot and Tuesday’s game is difficult to predict the outcome.
However, Liverpool’s high quality and regular performances in the opening weeks depended on the odds in their favour. After Saturday’s defeat, any victory would see the Reds start their Champions League campaign.
