Jeremy Swayman and the Boston Bruins Still Have Work to Do
The Fourth Season’s Dave Pagnotta joined Mick Kern and Dennis Bernstein on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio and was asked about the latest on Jeremy Swayman and the Boston Bruins.

Mick Kern: “Well, on that note, what happened to Jeremy Swayman at the Bruins? It seems like an obvious thing. When they were traded, you know, they were part of the hug team to go to Ottawa or whatever. And again, a great question. We tried to talk to Dave about this. Dennis and I, I understand, always take the player’s side as a knee-jerk reaction.
Earn money that you can’t because you lose when you don’t do anything in the team. I get it. I get that from a team perspective as well. So get your money, but you also want to win. So how much do you want to quote, quote, hit the salary cap so they don’t get someone else? That’s kind of a balancing act, with all the hometown discount stuff, right?”

Dave Pagnotta: “Yes, it is, and that is a factor, certainly to some extent. And you know, public offering. Ryan Whitney, full credit to him for being the first on it, and it was accurate for four years and a 6.2 AAV, which is what the team gave you. Although I believe, I think that happened early in the process this season. “
Kern: “Is this the Swayman you’re talking about?”
Pagnotta: “Yes, obviously, those discussions changed during the summer. But, I mean, so I get the discount side of things. But if Boston was 6.2 wide at the beginning of these negotiations, and Swayman was nine once, I mean, okay, you can take a little discount. But there is no $3 million discount here.”
Kern: “No, no, no.”

So they had a lot of work to do during this summer. So yes, those factors, but again, there have to be facts on both sides. So they’re still doing that, trying to close that financial gap, and it’s been a struggle. Dawson Mercer, with New Jersey, hasn’t been around as much.
I think of those; maybe you’re looking at Swayman, Sider and Raymond on long-term deals at the end of this, and I think you’re probably seeing guys like Mercer and Perfetti on short-term deals for bridges for two, maybe three years.
But again, everyone has to come to the table. Everyone likes to work on a deadline, and we have an unofficial deadline, I think, with the team that is the start of the camps. So maybe things really pick up over the weekend.”
