Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell says he and Sean Dyche are doing everything they can to take the club forward, but admits the manager is working under ‘extremely difficult circumstances’.
The Toffees have made a poor start to their last season at Goodison Park, losing all four of their Premier League games so far – including going 2-0 down leading to 3-2 defeats against Bournemouth and Aston Villa .
In fact, their record is the worst of all 96 teams in Europe’s top five leagues, and they were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the third round on penalties at home to Southampton in midweek.
Some fans want Dyche to be fired, despite the fact that he led Everton to fifteenth place last season, which would have been in twelfth place if not for eight points.
Thelwell insists Dyche is working hard to improve Everton’s fortunes
Thelwell has moved to protect Dyche, with the two working closely to try and improve the club’s fortunes.
“Sean and I work very closely together, our offices are a meter apart so we always and consistently talk about what we can do, how we can use the resources we have to try to make things better going forward,” said Thelwell. BBC Radio Merseyside.
“Sean is responsible for the team’s preparation and performance and results. My responsibility is the support services that live around that. It’s about us talking about some of the operational issues we have.”
Next up for Everton is a trip to Leicester City who are also winless with just two points on the board so far.
The Toffees will be desperate to turn their season around and Thelwell insists Dyche is doing everything he can to get Everton back on track under ‘difficult circumstances’.
“I can promise everyone that nothing can be changed in terms of trying to fix our current situation,” Thelwell added. “He [Dyche] he works under very difficult conditions.
“We still have ownership and financial issues to resolve and that makes it very difficult for the manager if we want to take that next step.”
