“I’m not convinced for a long time” – Mikel Arteta accused of misusing Arsenal’s £38m star

Troy Deeney has accused Mikel Arteta of abusing Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber.

The Dutch defender has been one of the standout players for the Gunners at the start of this season, despite most of them playing the unfamiliar position of left back.

Timber’s form has been well received by Arsenal fans after injury ruled out his first season at the Emirates Stadium in 2023/24, following his £38m move from Ajax (via Sky Sports).

The 23-year-old has scored more defensive tackles than any other Arsenal player this season (7).

But despite Timber’s success at left-back, former Watford striker Deeney still believes he would be better placed in a more regular role at right-back.

“I still think they needed a striker and I’m not sure about Timber for a long time at left back, I think he’s a right back and he’s a natural there. You have to look at the injuries during the season and Odegaard is out big,” said Deeney (via TBR).

Timber is a key asset for Arsenal

It is very likely that Timber will be reinstated at right back or even at center back when Riccardo Calafiori arrives in the summer when he is fit and up to speed in English football.

Still, that Timber has done so well on his weak side, even keeping left-footed Oleksandr Zinchenko out of the team at times, is a testament to his ability and versatility. Valuable assets for a team chasing the Premier League title.
