“Since I have seen him and known him for so long, I went to him and asked him the reason why he did not bowl enough,” said Kartik. “And what he’s saying to me is something I can relate to completely. He’s had surgery on his bowling finger which is his left hand finger. It’s swollen, it’s stiff, there’s no movement. So he feels he’s not getting anything out of it as a spinner and he’s got a problem with his shoulder so it’s a combination of both. and it’s hard to bowl in Test cricket you feel like a spinner.”

Tamim Iqbal later said on air that if Bangladesh picked Shakib deliberately without getting upset on his spinning finger, the visitors were playing with a short bowler.

“Murali Kartik said that Shakib is having trouble catching the ball because of this finger injury. If so, Bangladesh is playing with four top bowlers. The team management should inform whether they are aware of this injury or not,” said Tamim.

BCB’s senior doctor, Dr. Debashish, said that they do not understand Shakib’s discomfort due to an injury to his finger or shoulder.

“Shakib broke his finger in the World Cup in India,” he said. “Before that, he had a virus due to a finger injury a few years ago. Shakib though has not recently complained about a finger or shoulder injury. However, a broken finger can cause discomfort.”

Despite failing to take a wicket in the Test, Shakib got out in a poor reverse sweep after Litton Das got out in the first innings. Shakib is also trying something new in his batting style, apparently biting his neckband so that his head does not fall while playing the ball.
