The successful staging of the Italian Challenge Open last week provided Argentario Golf & Wellness Resort with the perfect forerunner for the Tuscan resort to host the Italian Open on the DP World Tour in 2025.
The Italian Challenge Open, held from 19-22 September during the tournament at Argentario, was won by 37-year-old John Parry of England by one shot over Justin Walters of South Africa. It was Parry’s third win of the season, earning him automatic promotion to the DP World Tour and the €56,000 first prize for the tournament’s 16th edition.
Hosting this Challenge Tour event has been awarded to Argentario Golf Club and Resort experience is essential in hosting a professional tournament and meeting the needs of the 156 players who played in the event during the week. This will undoubtedly help a lot when the Italian Open will be held for the first time in June next year.
“I couldn’t be more proud to be hosting the Italian National Open in 2025 and I know the whole team at the Resort is looking forward to being part of this important week and welcoming the players and spectators,“ commented Augusto Orsini, owner of Argentario Golf & Wellness Resort and president of Argentario Golf Club, when it was announced that Argentario would be the site of the Italian Open in 2025 last year.
“The Italian Open will be a great opportunity to show off our championship course and our golf and wellness area and the Maremma region, which has a lot to offer in terms of nature, cultural and historical cities, beautiful mountain towns and a multitude of water sports, hiking and cycling options.”
The quality agreement of the golf course in Argentario, is the only one in Italy with PGA National Italy status, awarded by the Professional Golfers’ Association in 2019. The structure proved a tough test for the Challenge Tour professionals with its narrowness. and fairways with trees, small greens and a variety of water hazards add to the technical difficulty of the layout, where precision and golf course management are key to posting good scores.
Argentario is hopeful Italy’s Matteo Manassero will be one of the contenders for next year’s Italian Open following a recent resurgence in form. Last year the 31-year-old won the Italian Challenge Open and followed it up with another trophy at the 2024 Jonsson Workwear Open on the DP World Tour. Last week he finished fourth in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth after leading the tournament after 54 holes.
