As we head into the fall, the countdown has begun to the 2025 US Masters, as talk of the runners and riders has begun. So, which golfers are among the writers’ favorites, who could be the dark horse this year and can anyone stop reigning champion Scottie Scheffler?
Great opponents
The 2025 US Masters will take place from 7-13 April at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. Early betting has already begun, with plenty of flutters already made on Scottie Scheffler. It’s no surprise that Scheffler, who won last year by four goals and has held the top spot for more than 100 weeks, is the favorite in the division.

Other challengers include Xander Schauffele, who is currently second in the rankings, although admittedly some distance behind Scheffler, and has won both the PGA Championship and the Open Championship. American golfers Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark and Bryson DeChambeau may fancy their chances on home soil, as Americans have won the trophy since its inception. Outside of Europe and the US, as world number seven, Japanese golfer Hideki Matsuyama is also among the favorites after claiming the top spot in 2021.
The bookies refuse to rule out Rory McIlroy either. The Irishman may have fallen short of the hype at the US Open, but he is still one of the best golfers in the world and will be looking to finally win a major after a 10-year drought. Of course, some players may wish for a dark horse with more odds to win, as Brit Danny Willett did in 2016, when he went 50-1 to become the first European champion in 17 years.
Still before the field
Let’s not forget Scottie Scheffler himself, of course. In addition to his two Masters tournaments, Scheffler has a total of 17 professional tour wins and has been at the top of the rankings since March 2022. However, he is still falling short, and has yet to win any more majors in his career so far. . On top of this, he is still the one with the chance to win the famous title this time as well.
That could all change in the next few months, of course. In golf, perhaps more than any other sport, form, attitude and mindset are just as important as skill and fitness, and as we all know, they can swing from one to the other in an instant. One thing is for sure, though: as we get closer to the action and the excitement builds, it will be interesting to see who else emerges as a title contender.
