Chris Paul and Pop Talk team up after ‘disdain’
Over the past two decades, Chris Paul and Spurs coach Gregg Popovich have battled off and on the court 81 times.
And there is no love lost.
“I’ve despised Chris for years,” Popovich said.
The 75-year-old coach went on to explain why.
“It was hard to play with him because he’s a smart, smart and smart player,” Popovich said. “His IQ is off the charts. It was always difficult because he thinks before all of us coaches.”
When it came to Paul’s press conference, he admitted that the feeling of hatred was definitely felt on both sides.
“It is agreed,” said Paul.
He talked about the old battles between the two and that he enjoys playing under Pop rather than facing his own team.
“It was interesting,” said Paul. “The game was very different in the way it was played. I’ve played for a lot of coaches now and I’m always excited to learn new things. Yes, I understand the knowledge of the game I have, but I never stop learning. It makes me happy to hear Pop’s way of doing things.”
As well as meeting Pop, Paul will be accompanied by the hottest young player in the league – Victor Wembanyama.
The two haven’t shared the court yet, but CP3 has already identified some areas where he thinks he can elevate the French native’s game.
“Absolutely,” said Paul. “We’re just playing in the van, watching a movie. He will also be a sophomore. The league has really changed and improved since my second year. There’s a different kind of shine to him than there was to me and a lot of other players. Just trying to make sure he has the confidence to know he can do anything.”
