Rangers signed Chasen Shreve again Peter Solomon in minor league contracts, tweets Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. It looks like both pitchers will be headed to Triple-A Round Rock.
Shreve signed a minor league deal with Texas in the offseason. He attended camp as an undrafted free agent but did not make the team after allowing four runs in six innings. Shreve first accepted the Round Rock assignment. He played in 10 games, going 10 1/3 frames of three-run ball, before starting out in early May. Shreve spent a week scouting the market before circling back to Texas with a new league deal.
It is common for veterans on Shreve’s team to opt out of one major league deal to re-sign with the same program. The free agent stay at least gave his camp a chance to see if another team was willing to offer a quick MLB job. It is possible that the new contract contains an alternative option that was not in the original agreement.
Shreve pitched parts of 10 seasons in the major leagues. He has a 3.97 ERA in 356 innings across seven clubs. The 33-year-old left the Tigers and Reds last year. Shreve allowed 4.63 earned runs over nine strong strikeouts (23.3%) and walk (7.3%) numbers in 44 2/3 frames.
Solomon, 27, also entered the majors as recently as last season. He has less MLB experience than Shreve, totaling 27 1/3 innings through 11 appearances in long relief. The Notre Dame product is a former fourth-round pick of the Astros. He made his debut with Houston in 2021 and made five appearances for the Diamondbacks at the start of last season. Arizona claimed him on waivers in June and he reached major league free agency at the end of the year.
The right-hander opened 2024 with a free ball. He signed with the High Point Rockers of the Atlantic League, where he started three games. Solomon’s nine runs allowed in 12 2/3 innings isn’t eye-catching, but he ran a 19:3 strikeout-to-walk ratio that apparently impressed the Rangers enough to give him another chance at team ball.
Solomon has a 6.59 ERA with more walks than strikeouts in his shortened MLB career. He pitched parts of three seasons in the Pacific Coast League, allowing a 6.16 ERA in 261 1/3 innings. Solomon managed to hit 22.1% while working out of the bullpen at the minor league level. He can jump with a turn or a long freestyle at Round Rock.
