Andre Roberson: I still think back to that January night in Detroit

AR: Oh definitely. I mean, I had three obstacles when I was renovating in the beginning. And even when I got back to the bubble, I was about 85 percent healthy, but I wasn’t healthy, not really 100 percent healthy. I was allowed to go, but at the same time, you still have that part of your mind, like second-guessing yourself and feeling free to overexert yourself. So I still had that piece of mind to get through. I wouldn’t say I’m completely healthy or fully fit, but at the same time, you have to put yourself back there somehow, some way and break that barrier.

And then, I just took some time for myself after those three years just enjoying life and enjoying my little sisters growing up and watching them play basketball and helping them practice and shape their games before they go to college. TCU and Duke. It was a real joy to watch them because if I was still playing I would have really missed them. So it was nice to help out with them and, just enjoying the good life of being healthy for the first time was my biggest thing.

It was fun doing that, but at the same time, it was like… Do I want to continue playing basketball or do I want to head in a different direction in terms of finding a new job? So, I definitely had to sit down myself. Also, many conversations with my girlfriend about just, I’m finally in a good place. Would I want to go back there and risk injury again, I can’t say it happened, but, it’s always like that whenever you go down. And just get out there and pursue it. So I’m 32 years old, I’m not really ready to retire and move on. So, that’s why I’m back here now. So, going out there at the same time, I really didn’t want the injury to take me away. I wanted to go myself. So, that’s like a big motivation for me, get back out there and break that narrative.

I’m just going back to my roots, going out there and enjoying basketball the way I know how to enjoy basketball instead of telling the story of years like, oh, he can’t do this, you can’t do that. And I’m like, I’ve done this my whole life and I’ve gotten to that point where I’ve even made it to the NBA.

So that’s where I’m at… Bringing basketball full circle to me, just to see the American side and see it from the European side and just travel the world. There is no better way to travel the world than doing something you love and getting paid to do it at the same time. Therefore, it is very easy to do so. It is a blessing.
