Kambosos On the Precipice: Tonight Fight is Make-or-Break
George Kambosos Jr. He is expected to win this evening against Vasily Lomachenko who won the vacant IBF lightweight belt in Perth, Australia.
Kambosos Jr. (21-2, 10 KOs) has not looked good in any of his last three fights since his 2021 major win against Teofimo Lopez. It’s been all downhill for Kambosos since then, and it’s not looking good for him tonight when he faces Lomachenko at the RAC Arena on ESPN.
Kambosos: A Falling Star
- Record: 21-2, 10 KOs (but the truth is, those two losses were brutal)
Recent Performance: Very moving, very bad
Claim to Fame: An unexpected victory over Teofimo Lopez in 2021
Top Level: A Lifeline That Can Be Interrupted
If Kambosos loses to Loma, his chances of fighting high-profile fights for big paydays could disappear entirely, leaving the guy being used as a test horse for newcomers.
Kambosos, who was the United lightweight champion, probably shouldn’t have gotten this opportunity to fight for the IBF title, but it helped him to be signed with Top Rank. Without them, Kamboso wouldn’t be anywhere, fighting for peanuts against low-level fighters and probably still losing.
It cannot be understated how bad Kambosos has been, and his supporters cannot save him if he looks as bad tonight as he did recently. I think Top Rank will throw Kambosos in the water if he is beaten by Lomachenko.
They can’t protect the boy because he has shown that he can’t beat anyone out of ten. Top Rank won’t want to waste money on Kamboso if he can’t beat anyone.
Expert Opinion
“Kambosos, he comes with good and bad battles. It’s worse than good money,” boxing expert Chris Algieri said on YouTube channel Probox TV about tonight’s fight between George Kambosos Jr. and Vasily Lomachenko.
“He’s trying to maintain his quality as a guy who can make a lot of money against a top-level team in the championship division. Therefore, for him, losing here, it will be really difficult for him to get any level of heroism and high fights after the loss.
“With the win, there is a big chance for him to fight other heavyweight champions or go up to 140 and fight Teofimo and get another rematch against a guy he beat once,” said Algieri.
