Harbhajan Singh shares his insight on Rohit Sharma’s future with MI ahead of IPL 2025 auction

As a great auction of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 weavers, all eyes are fixed Mumbai Indians (MI) and their star player, Rohit Sharma. The five-time IPL champions enter a crucial period, especially after a lackluster 2024 campaign that saw them fail to qualify for the play-offs and finish at the bottom of the points table. With the big IPL 2025 auction around the corner, one of the most pressing questions is whether MI will retain their former captain, or enter the auction block for the first time in over a decade.

Harbhajan Singh discusses Rohit Sharma’s future

Due to the upcoming auction, the former MI captain Harbhajan Singh measured by the potential bidding war if Rohit enters the auction.

Harbhajan made a statement about Rohit’s future in the IPL, suggesting that it would be interesting to see if MI would retain him. He opined that if Rohit is released from the auction block, more teams might buy him, as several franchises are already considering the move. Harbhajan revealed that Rohit’s presence in the auction will generate a lot of interest from many teams.

It will be interesting to see if he will be retained or not. If he does enter the auction, it will be interesting to see which team bids for him. I’m sure many teams must think that way,” Harbhajan was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

The right-arm off-spinner also praised Rohit, calling him an amazing leader, player, and proven match-winner. He highlighted Rohit’s superb skills as a leader and player and noted that despite being 37 years old, Rohit still has a lot of cricket left in him.

“Rohit Sharma, as a leader and a player, is amazing. He is a great player, a great captain, and a leader. You are a guaranteed winner. Even at the age of 37, he still has a lot of cricket. If Rohit enters the auction, he will fetch huge sums. They will be happy to see the auction continue,” the cricketer turned commentator added.

Rohit’s legacy in MI

Since joining MI in 2011, Rohit has not only become the face of the franchise but also one of their most successful players. Over the course of his IPL career, the right-handed batsman has amassed 5,458 runs in 212 matches.

Under his captaincy, MI won five IPL titles – in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020 – making him the most successful bowler in IPL history. Even in the 2024 season, despite MI’s collective struggles, Rohit finished as the team’s top scorer, showing that he still has a lot to offer.

Although Rohit no longer captains Mumbai Indians, his leadership credentials are unmatched. Having captained MI to five IPLs, Rohit’s intelligence and ability to guide the team at crucial moments cannot be overlooked.

With IPL 2025 mega auction coming, MI are at the crossroads. The team must decide whether to retain Rohit, who has been the face of the franchise for over a decade, or allow him to enter the auction pool.
