The 18th hole at the Albatros Course at Le Golf National in Paris, which hosts this week’s Open de France, is renowned as one of the tightest closing holes in all of golf.

The 471-yard par-4 requires an accurate drive to avoid water on the left, and sand traps and dunes on the right.

It is more or less important to find the fairway to look at the green that sits on the other side of the lake.

Not only is carrying important, the green is on an island with only a small road connecting it to the dry land beyond.

Anything other than a solid connection will tear through the rack and into the water.

At the 2022 Open de France, Italy’s Guido Migliozzi entered the weekend 13 shots behind the leader but then caught fire and tied for the lead as he prepared to play for the 18th.

He rode the wave, hit a drive down the middle of the fairway and pulled his 4 iron out of the bag.

Birdie was going to set a tough target, but it was a big ask.

What happened next was voted Shot of the Year on the DP World Tour – watch the video to see.

“He’s cut it,” said analyst Mark Roe. “In fact, he moved from the left to the right.”

The ball starts low, rises quickly, and fades towards the pin.

“Wow, that’s unbelievable,” added Jay Townsend, Roe’s analyst. “It just gets better and better!”

The ball slides into the stands and briefly looks like it’s falling before finally closing.

“That’s probably the first bird of the day!” Townsend panted, highlighting how hard the hole was playing. “If he cries that he will win. The second fake gun.”

“That should be the winning shot,” Roe said. “That’s honestly the best shot I’ve ever seen on the 18th hole at Paris National. The best golf game in the world. I can’t believe he did this.”

“With the difficulty of that shot, and the pressure on the line with my teammates, that’s an unbelievable kill,” Townsend added.

“One of the greatest golf shots I’ve ever seen in my entire career,” Roe concluded.

A birdie finished the round of 62 for Migliozzi and the victory was his.

“Emotional explosion,” he said afterward. “A wonderful day. It’s a good day.”

And a good shot.
