On the first of three days of play at the 2024 Bridges Cup, the US team of 12 elite middleweights finds itself in a familiar position: atop the leaderboard, with a 6-4 advantage over the international side.

With 10 games – and 10 points – up for grabs at Haesley Nine Bridges in Korea on the opening day, the Americans, winners of the first two editions of the event, won five of six games in the morning fourball session ahead of the internationals. charged back in the afternoon foursome sessions, winning three of the four available points.

Lukas Michel and Jacob Austin for the Internationals won the opening four-ball match, but the US dominated throughout. All five remaining games went the Americans’ way, each tied before the 18th hole. When the teams adjourned for lunch, the US held a 5-1 lead.

“Team USA definitely had a lot of energy this morning,” said Simon Holmes, a golf champion and Bridges Cup analyst who is in Korea this week. “They just went ahead and won their matches convincingly.”

In the same manner as the internationals in the President Cup last month, this international team showed their composure in the second half. After captain Simon Holt’s speech, they returned to the fourth session of the afternoon with a new sense of urgency.

“We’ve thrown the kitchen sink at it,” Holt said. “But we have a team full of leaders and four players who play well with each other … Everything we can do [do] look what happened this afternoon.”

Once again, the team of Michel and Austin came out of the first game of the session and blew away their opponents, winning 4 and 3. But this time, the whole team used good momentum as the Internationals won three out of four. afternoon games to draw between the two US points at the end of the day.

“The Internationals had a great talk and show of passion this afternoon,” said Holmes. “Team USA was very comfortable with the fast start, but the Internationals showed their talent at the end of the day.”

Dat 2 of the Bridges Cup will feature six fourball matches, followed by 12 singles matches on Day 3. With 30 points up for grabs, the US needs 15 points to keep the trophy, while the Internationals need 15.5 points to get it.
