‘It was fast’ – Justin Thomas explains unexpected driver change
Justin Thomas made an unexpected driver change in the second quarter of the 2024 season.
Thomas has loved Titleist’s TSR3 driver since 2022.
After his recent start at the 2024 RBC Heritage, Thomas had a few weeks off, so he tried to adjust his driver setup away from home with the help of JJ Van Wezenbeeck, the Titleist Tour’s qualifying specialist.
Van Wezenbeeck and Thomas talked on the phone about what driver and shaft combinations they might try after reviewing his current driver stats.
While Thomas was at home and receiving a customized package of differential products from Van Wezenbeeck, he found that Titleist’s TSR2 head, along with his trusty Mitsubishi Diamana ZF 60TX machine, greatly improved performance.
“I would say I was driving it well, not driving it well, so I just wanted to, honestly, check it out or try some things,” Thomas said Tuesday in an interview with GolfWRX.com.
“I had used that style of head a few years ago (Thomas used a TSi2 driver around 2021); I know there should be more navigation. Obviously, yes, I would like to go further, but if I could get a little more rotation and make my mishits a little more consistent, I felt like that would be better for my driving…
“This (TSR2) was very good. I drove it really well the week I used it.
“Hitting it harder, I don’t know if it’s the way it looks or what it is, but it’s a little bit consistent with the numbers that are turning. Small knuckle ball curves. It was fast.
“It’s probably a little faster than what I’ve been using. Maybe it’s a big-headed thing, maybe psychologically it looks more forgiving.”
Thomas is happy that he has a new head.
“I trust (Van Wezenbeeck) and I trust the guys at Titleist,” said Thomas.
“I feel like I can make a swing and it does what I want, or I feel it should.
“Just putting in a different head and using the same shaft I’ve used forever is great.
“There are other shafts they sent that were good, but I think changing two things at once… removes the question mark. At least when something is off, it’s like, okay, maybe something has a head because I have the same cavity.”
