Shreyas Iyer after Ranji ton – No matter what people think, I have to listen to my body
Calling the century “special,” Iyer said: “Coming back after a long time, obviously I was feeling down because of my injury, but now to get a hundred after a very long time, it’s a great feeling.
“I totally miss you a [Test] to come back but yes, as we say, control the controllable things and my job is to continue to do and continue to participate as much as possible and also see that my body is in the best shape. So I will make the best decision based on that.”
“It doesn’t matter,” he said. “But there was this stage where I felt it might happen again. But yeah, I’ve trained a lot to make sure I’m fit enough and obviously it comes here and there, but now my strength has improved a lot.”
And how did he get his body there?
“Training. Yes, it’s clear that I’ve improved my runninga long distance and that’s what I wanted. You know, increase my patience and about the long format and according to what I was training. [I did] intense training like pushing my body, like pushing my body 400-800 meters of running and I was trying to push my limits and make sure I’m at the highest level of fitness.
[Earlier]even if I sat for a long time, stood for a long time, the back was automatically strong and yes, that’s actually what I wanted to improve on.”
Did fitness issues and the way he thought “nobody agreed,” create a false impression of him in Test cricket?
“Look, I had spoken about my feelings for a long time and things didn’t go my way,” he said, adding that he was ready to put it behind him. “But I’ve talked about it in the past interviews I’ve done and I’m in a good space right now. I’m doing what I’m meant to do, which is to train and play games regularly and I feel that. all the games I’ve played now in the past have helped me get that level of fitness, and my training.”
Playing his sixth first-class game in a row in the last six weeks, Iyer said, “The body has taken a huge load at once. in terms of how I play. Now I have to be smart about what decisions I make, I need to see that my body is in the best shape as I said before, I have to decide according to that. Regardless of what people think outside I have to listen to my body because I know the limit made in the last few years and based on that, I will be making the right decision, and I hope my team will also come back. [that].”
“You win three titles a year, what more can you ask for? All I see is good things here and winning the trophy and that’s what I want.”
Shreyas Iyer for missing out on the India A team to tour Australia
“Nowadays, when the teams come, they just set up a defense in the first ball,” he said. “So I was just trying to take time, between trying to play more balls than to score goals, so that was my plan. Play each time and try to see how much my body can take. When I say that I played the game a few competitions ago, that was the reason I got to know that I can to smash all the balls, but at the same time I have to hit for a long time if I want my body to be ready for any situation offered by the opponents And yes , we have faced many challenges in the past.
After the game against Maharashtra, Iyer will play three more league games that Mumbai are scheduled to play this year before the Ranji Trophy season is put on hold for the 50-over and 20-over white-ball competition. It may be a stretch to say that Iyer will be a strong contender for the Australian tour, as he was not called up in the India A squad for the two red-ball matches starting on October 31.
Does Iyer feel like he mixed a bag of chocolates this year?
“You win three titles a year, what more can you ask for? All I see is good things here and winning the trophy and that’s what I want.”
