Improving distance control from greenside bunkers can seem tricky, but with this simple tip from Devan Bonebrake, Golf’s Top 100 Teacher to Watch, you can sharpen your fairways and make more swings on sandy lies.
As Bonebrake explains in the video below, if you want better distance control from the bunker, all you have to do is adjust your tempo, not the length of your swing.
“One of the biggest mistakes I see when players try to switch distances, is that they get too short a backslide,” said Bonebrake.
While it sounds good in theory, short recoil often causes players to rush their descent and leave their shot short, or even in the basement.

Instead, keep your bunker swing the same length and adjust your speed to match the distance you want the ball to travel. Need to travel some distance? Swipe slowly. Want to continue football? Add some speed.
“We don’t have to change too much,” said Bonebrake, “And having a longer swing, having a longer swing, will also help [the ball] wake up in high spirits.”
You will now be able to swing confidently in the sand, and with practice, place your bunker shot close enough to make the putt.
