Ind vs NZ 3rd Test – Jasprit Bumrah likely to be rested for Mumbai Test

Jasprit Bumrah is likely to miss the third and final Test of the series against New Zealand in Mumbai. Bumrah was with the team when they started training at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, but what he did was little practice and physical exercise. He did not throw himself during India’s training sessions at the stadium.

It is understood that Bumrah is not injured, it is not known whether the team management wanted to rest him or Bumrah himself wanted to rest.

News that Bumrah might miss the match came shortly after head coach Gautam Gambhir said all players were available for selection, and brushed aside concerns that Bumrah was not bowling in training.

“I think of him [Bumrah] he is finishing his preparations,” Gambhir said on Thursday, “I think we know what the weather is like in Mumbai, so obviously he needs to conserve his energy. So he has finished his bowling, he has prepared himself very well, and he is ready. That’s why he is a top player, he knows how much he needs to prepare for a Test match.”

Bumrah has played four Tests of the domestic season so far, and has bowled the third overs (90) and taken the third wickets (14). He was given the vice-captaincy of the team recently and is in line to lead it for the start of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in November, when Rohit Sharma is expected to miss the first Test due to personal reasons. Given his other role as the leader of the bowling team, India will want Bumrah to be fit and firing in the five Tests of the tour, which starts on November 18 and runs through to January 7.
There are no indications from the team management, two days after they went to practice at Wankhede, that Bumrah will miss the game. Assistant coach Abhishek Nayar even highlighted how India’s recent Tests have not gone well and that Bumrah’s career has not reached a level where they would worry about him.

“In the two Test matches he has taken it out [against New Zealand] about 20-25 overs. So he hasn’t thrown much,” Nayar said on Wednesday. “Yes, there will always be a plan to think about his career. We also played two games that we didn’t have five days cricket, another three, three and a half. So he has rested enough. But Booms is very important to us and his work will always be in our minds. “

The fast bowlers are unlikely to get much help from Mumbai’s prepared pitch. The red soil should ensure that there is a good jump and the morning moisture combined with the new ball may give a small window to do a little damage, but especially the spinners where both teams will be turning to them. India have already lost 2-0, their first home series defeat in 12 years, making the Test a dead rubber, albeit with WTC points at stake. India are top of the WTC table and fighting for a place in the final at Lord’s in June 2025.
