Titleist dominates the professional scene.
Take a look at any leaderboard and you’ll be given the proof: the name Titleist next to every golfer who uses their products.
First unveiled in 2000, and hitting the consumer market in December of that year, we have now fully experienced the half century of the popular Pro V1 and Pro V1x.
They fly far, they spin, they feel good off the putter.
What’s not to like?!
But who was the first to succeed in playing solo?
Perhaps surprisingly it was Billy Andrade with the first generation Pro V1.
The four-time PGA Tour winner’s last victory was in October 2000 at the Invensys Classic in Las Vegas which broke the dam.
The story is told in this great little video.
“Going into Vegas I was 180 on the money list,” Andrade explained.
“I had registered for Q School and I hadn’t done that in 20 years.
“There were only three tournaments left.”
In other words, his hopes were dim but he had some hope when he arrived in Sin City.
“I got to Vegas and this white box was in our closets,” he says.
“This is a new ball that we have heard about and we have tested it. But (they felt that) when does it come out, when does it come out? And suddenly it appeared.”
Great timing for Andrade.
“I shot a few 67s in the first two days,” he explains. “And I was like, wow, where did this thing come from?
“In the third round I shot 63 and now I’m tied for the lead or next to it.
“I was not afraid of the position I was in at the weekend.
“I thought, you know, I’m going to win this thing, it’s my chance.
“And to do what I did, to win – it’s amazing.
“To win with this golf ball, it’s just amazing.”
What makes football special?
“The distance, the distance control, the green, everything about the ball was very good.
“I am really honored. I was the first. That is something I will never forget.”
And since Andrade won?
The Pro V1 and Pro V1x have helped Titleist celebrate more than 4,000 victories around the world.
