WATCH: Use ‘Hell Drill’ and control face rotation

Achieving consistent clubface control greatly reduces lost strokes on the golf course.

The margin for error when swinging the club is small if the face is too wide, the ball will slice to the right. If it is closed, it will connect to the left.

If the golf club is often squared upon impact, the transfer of energy will be increased further, making it much easier to play with confidence and control the distance.

With consistency comes improvement, and if your contact with the ball is consistently clean, you can consider making more detailed improvements to your game.

Controlling club rotation during the swing will help build confidence and promote mental and physical development on the range and course.

This exercise, which can be used during range sessions, will help you improve clubface control.

The ‘Hell Drill’, created by Scott Cowx, Canada’s 2019 Coach of the Year, involves placing your lower hand flat on the grip as a guide during the golf swing.

Hitting 20 balls per session with these drills will, over time, make permanent improvements to straight golf shots.

If you’re confident that the shots will go straight, you’re more prepared to tackle tight fairways and difficult pin locations.

The ‘Hell’ drill can be frustrating at first, as it highlights weaknesses in the golf swing.

But over time, practice will reshape your swing, have lasting results and improve golf.

If done incorrectly, the drill can also damage your swing, so it’s important to video the drill or get a friend or coach at the range to check that you’re not developing bad habits.
