Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 – India draw second semi-final on June 27 in Providence, Guyana

India will play the second semi-final of the men’s T20 World Cup on June 27 in Providence, Guyana, if they make it to the snow stage. The ICC playing conditions of the tournament, accessed by ESPNcricinfo, confirm this.

India may have been allocated a semi-final in Guyana due to the timing of the match.

The first semi-final to be held in Tarouba, Trinidad, is a night game, to be played from 8.30pm local time on June 26 – India at 6am on June 27. Guyana’s semi-final will start at 10.30am. local time, which is 8pm which is good for TV in India.

The final in Bridgetown, Barbados, is also a day game, starting at 10am local time on June 29, or 7.30pm in India.

The playing conditions also confirmed that there will be no postponement date for the second semi-final. Instead, there will be 250 minutes of extra time allocated to the match – rather than the 190 minutes allocated to the first semi-final and final, which have fixed dates – to try to ensure it ends in the event of weather disruptions.

This extra hour of overtime was added because the tournament schedule does not allow for a reserve day, with only one day gap between the second and final semi-finals.

The second semi-final could be very tight if there is persistent rain, especially since a significant result can only be achieved if both teams bowl at least ten overs.

In most T20 matches, only the team batting second has to bowl five overs to get the result in matches shortened by weather or other disruptions. This remains the case in most T20 World Cup matches.

In the semi-final and final, the team batting second will have to face at least ten overs to decide the result. It was the same with the semi-finals and finals of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.
