NHL Rumors: Coaching – Hurricanes, Sharks, Devils, Kings, Kraken, Maple Leafs

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio Wednesday with Scott Laughlin and Gord Stellick and was asked about the coaching carousel in the NHL and when it will end.

NHL Rumors: Coaching – Maple Leafs, Devils, Kings, Jets, and Sharks

Gord Stellick: “So you talked about Berube in Toronto as an equal. How about a week from now? When does LA decide if Hiller is in or out? Does it depend on who is available?

When does Seattle decide? When does New Jersey decide? Rod Brind’Amour, I mean, he loves Carolina, and he coaches in Carolina. Is he ever going to play or not, if we just talk a week or two down the road?”

Carolina Hurricanes

Elliotte Friedman: “I think Brind’Amour is done. You know, he doesn’t want to leave there. Also, and I’m sure the Hurricanes know this, no coach has had a greater influence on his team’s culture than Rod Brind’Amour in the NHL.

And I like to say I think the Hurricanes know that well. And he wants to stay, and in the end, I think that is done. It was harder than it needed to be. It was a lot harder than it needed to be. But bet like I said Gordie before the best source I have says that one is done so I’m going with that until proven wrong.

Los Angeles Kings

Friedman: “LA, I’m not sure yet. I think they were planning to decide if Hiller was their man first and then see what was available. But I won’t be surprised if they talk to other people. But I know Hiller had a chance to keep that job.”

New Jersey Devils

Friedman: “New Jersey was an interesting experience. I think they had a really long conversation with Berube. I think he met the owner and for a while I thought it would be him. And I think they took a long look at Jay Woodcroft and I think they took a long look at Sheldon Keefe. And then I think I heard that a second interview was scheduled for Todd McLellan. Not sure where that stops.

So I thought they were getting close. A few people have told me yet. But, there have been very serious people there for discussions. And I thought they were close a few times. I have to wait and see how this plays out.”

Seattle Kraken

Friedman: “Seattle, I said this morning in our pod, that I’m looking at three people there. Dan Bylsma, McClellan and Jay Leach.

NHL Rumors: Carolina Hurricanes, Vegas Golden Knights, and Detroit Red Wings

San Jose Sharks

Friedman: “In San Jose, I think Jeff Blashill was interviewed there. And I’m looking at a potential candidate like Marco Sturm, who is coaching in the American Hockey League right now. Ontario is still alive. He is an ex-Shark. And maybe another Ryan Warsofsky, their assistant coach was interviewed there.

So I don’t know how close San Jose is and I think Warsofsky is likable, in the sense that I think that’s a guy who deserves a second chance. So we will see what happens in these cases.”

Toronto Maple Leafs

Friedman: “I think the one that stands out for me is obviously Toronto because it’s so breathtaking and so attention-grabbing. And me, I think it will be Berube unless something goes wrong. “
