Clubs in England’s top flight believe the use of VAR has “damaged the relationship between fans and football,” according to a statement released by Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Introduced in the 2019/20 season, the purpose of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was to help officials make important decisions in matches.
However, since its introduction, it has done more harm than good amid many questionable decisions and inconsistencies.
A statement released by Wolves read as follows:
“It has led to a number of unintended negative consequences that damage the relationship between fans and football and undermine the importance of the Premier League brand.”
How quickly can VAR be overruled?
All 20 Premier League clubs will vote on the decision to scrap the technology at their annual meeting on June 6.
Premier League rules state that for any rule to change, it needs a two-thirds majority vote. This will mean that 14 of the 20 clubs will have to vote to overturn this decision.
With Wolves already the club confirmed to support the decision, the other 13 clubs need to vote for VAR to be removed.
“There is no blame to be laid – we are all looking for the best possible outcome for football.”
A statement issued by Wolves, a club more familiar with being on the side of VAR decisions, confirms that it is not a case of foul play but to protect the integrity of the game.
They persist that: “all stakeholders have been working hard to try to make the introduction of additional technologies a success. However, after five seasons of VAR in the Premier League, it is time for a constructive and serious debate about its future. “
