Julen Lopetegui looks set to disappoint the West Ham duo with a big decision

Julen Lopetegui has a tough job on his hands when he arrives at West Ham next season and the biggest decision the Spanish coach will have to make is who will lead his side during the 2024/25 campaign.

It has been an up and down season for the Hammers and it led to David Moyes leaving after the final game on Sunday.

One problem that West Ham fans have felt throughout this group has been the lack of leadership in their team with their former captain Declan Rice having left the London club last summer for Arsenal.

Kurt Zouma took that role and that was always a questionable choice for Moyes.

The defender did not have a great campaign at the London Stadium as he led a defense that conceded 71 goals and counting this season – the most West Ham have ever conceded in the Premier League.

This is an issue that Lopetegui will need to address if the Hammers are to progress as a team and deciding on a new captain will be one of the first ports of call for the former Wolves boss when he arrives.

Will Kurt Zouma stay as West Ham captain next season?

Julen Lopetegui may choose James Ward-Prowse as the new West Ham captain

According to The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas, James Ward-Prowse is in the running to become West Ham’s next captain.

If Lopetegui settles for this midfielder, he will disappoint his two players as Zouma will lose his place and Jarrod Bowen was hoping to get the belt.

Ward-Prowse would be a good choice given his experience in the Premier League and it would be a decision that West Ham fans would welcome as the Englishman has been solid since his move to the club.
