Tuesday’s loss in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals left the Cleveland Monsters looking for answers, but the head coach. Trent Vogelhuber likes to point out that each game in a playoff series is a new beginning.
The Monsters have at least one fresh start for them tonight when they try to avoid elimination in Game 4 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. After a back-to-back overtime loss to Hershey to start the series, the Monsters battled back to tie Game 3 after Hershey took a 2-0 lead but ultimately fell, 6-2.
“We have to regroup,” Vogelhuber told reporters afterward, making it a point to emphasize that the Monsters must show more discipline. “The message is that we’ve had a great season so far, and whether it’s one game or 11, we have to play in a way that makes our season proud. You can’t go down like we did in the third [period of Game 3].
“Play with each other like you have all year.”
The Milwaukee Admirals could greatly affect Cleveland’s woes. After all, the Admirals have faced this uncomfortable situation before.
Milwaukee is already 4-0 this season after staring down the stretch, but they face a big challenge after Tuesday’s 5-2 loss to Coachella Valley in Game 3.
“All odds are working now,” the head coach Karl Taylor he told reporters. “We are against it now. As a team, I like our creativity and how strong we were in the playoffs. Our locker room is really tight these days.
The Admirals needed three wins in the division semifinal series against Texas, then took a Game 5 decision over Grand Rapids in the division final.
“It sounds very similar,” the defender Marc Del Gaizo said. “We’ve been here before.”
Taylor added, “We’re not going to be easy.
As Cleveland and Milwaukee look to extend their seasons tonight, it’s been 50 years since both league semifinal series ended in sweeps.
In 1974, Hershey swept the Baltimore Clippers in the Southern Division finals, and the Providence Reds swept the New Haven Nighthawks in four straight in the Northern Division finals.
The Bears went on to win the Calder Cup in five games.
