Anthony Gordon looks at the ‘big picture’ after England’s defeat by Iceland

Anthony Gordon has urged England fans to look at the ‘big picture’ following Friday’s shock 1-0 defeat by Iceland.

The Three Lions fell to a Jon Thorsteinsson strike in the 12th minute and could not bounce back from an uninspiring night at Wembley in their final pre-Euro 2024 warm-up game.

Gordon was one of England’s few bright sparks with driving runs and quick link-up play, particularly in the first half.

And speaking to Channel 4 after the game, the Newcastle midfielder was determined to stay positive despite England’s worrying form.

“It didn’t go the way we wanted, but that’s the big picture,” said Gordon.

“Our practice is good, maybe this is the way the teams will play with us, so when we play against such teams, we learn to break them down better.

“We lacked a bit of quality in the last third.”

Gordon hopes to start against Serbia

England’s opening game of Euro 2024 against Serbia is just over a week away.

With two chances created and three dribbles completed, Gordon certainly made the most of his last chance to impress Southgate before the big game.

Although this is only his third senior game for England, Gordon hopes he has done enough to convince his manager to give him a game in Gelsenkirchen a week on Sunday.

“I hope so. It’s the first time I’ve kicked a ball in four weeks so I wanted to run to go to the competition feeling fit and fresh,” said Gordon.
