The Challenge Tour Grand Final saw Ireland’s Gary Hurley play a ‘practice move’ as he looks to lock down a DP World Tour card.
The former Walker Cup star tried the move in practice and found it to be very beneficial and used it at the season ender of the Challenge Tour in Spain.
“It’s just a step that I started to take last week, especially since there are long groups, disbanding happens a lot if I’m free and I say I’m going to try.
“I did it in the practice rounds and it was fine, on Thursday it was fine and again on Friday,” said Hurley, who would fall short of the card after rounds of 70-69-75-68 to tie for 31st. .
“(Harrington) is a little different, mine is an extreme version. I step back in, you do it for power I think, I do it for my sequence in my turn.
“It helps, but these things come and go, but I’m sticking to it.”

Hurley’s compatriot Padraig Harrington has been an advocate of this move for the past few years and, as is often the case with a three-time Grand Prix winner, we can all learn a lot from him.
“Most of the time when people practice swinging, you will see the front runners, they first go forward and then take a small step. It is very natural to tread. If we’re going to throw the ball, we’re going to step on it, OK? You will always be stepping. So it’s actually a good practice still. So I would say to all the newbies, step up and shoot,” Harrington explained.
“You have to be able to do that and not feel like it’s weird or uncomfortable. So you have to practice it until it feels familiar.
“What you’ll find, especially if you were a player as a kid and if you play sports, you’ll find that movement will free you, it’ll give you a lot of the separation we’re talking about, it’ll leave you the same. they all talk, and you’ll probably end up playing with it.
“Just because it’s not normal doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it, but a lot of people will just hit the ball a lot better by having that little step, and remember it’s a natural step.
“If I were to climb a stone on water, as I was going backwards I would be going forward. If you are an average golfer who may not have been an athlete, you have to practice until you are comfortable, because even with your feet on the ground you need that machine.
“This is all you need for most beginner golfers. Just get that motion, step, step, and it feels really comfortable, it plays very well, it’s very familiar, and if it doesn’t feel right to you, then you’re swinging the club the wrong way, because that’s how it should be. in your golf swing.”
