Aamer Jamal leaves Warwickshire after a back injury

Warwickshire’s Aamer Jamal’s injuries have come to an end after his fitness struggles cost him three appearances in all formats during his six weeks of county cricket.

Jamal joined Warwickshire in April after his absence from Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad opened up his presence, and he was included in their squad to face Nottinghamshire 24 hours after arriving in the UK.

But he took a solitary wicket in his first two games in the County Championship, with coach Mark Robinson admitting he was “struggling for rhythm” and “not hitting the kind of pace we’d like him to hit”. Jamal then stopped playing due to a back problem and since then he has not played in the Championship.

His contract also covered the Blast but he was limited to one appearance due to injury, where he bowled one wicketless for 25 runs and was dismissed for the first ball.

Gavin Larsen, director of cricket at Warwickshire, said: “Aamir has worked hard with our fitness and health team, but unfortunately, we’ve run out of time to get him back on the pitch and bowling at full speed… he’s very disappointed not to have shown his skills to the Bears fans.”

Jamal’s team-mate Hasan Ali has also struggled with injuries while at Warwickshire and has not played for them against the Blast since June 14 due to an elbow problem. He is expected to stay in this club until the end of July.

Warwickshire have been short of seam-bowling options throughout the season, with Craig Miles, Liam Norwell and Chris Rushworth all missing long periods through injury. Their hard-fought side beat the Blast, topping the North Group after 10 games, but sit eighth in Division One of the Championship and are yet to register a win.

They have bolstered their reserves from next summer with the signing of former England Under-19 player Ethan Bamber from Middlesex, it was announced on Monday. “Ethan was very excited about the game, and we are very happy that he has chosen to call Edgbaston home for the future,” Larsen said in a press release.

Alan Coleman, Larsen’s Middlesex team-mate, said he was “naturally disappointed” that Bamber had opted to leave after being offered a long-term contract. “Ethan is a young man with ambitions and a desire to challenge himself in a new environment and with a passion to play for England,” said Coleman.
