Adrien Broner, Blair Cobbs Both Under Welterweight Limit, Set For Grudge Match
In fact, Adrien Broner has shown up and is ready to fight.
The former four-division fighter will face Blair Cobbs, as both were under the welterweight limit of 147 pounds. Broner came in fit and cut 146 pounds, while Cobbs cut 145.6 pounds.
Their fight will headline Friday’s Thriller TV pay-per-view from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
Broner (35-4-1, 24 knockouts) will fight for the first time in 52 weeks. The 34-year-old Cincinnati native signed with Hall of Fame promoter Don King last year. His one fight under that deal came in a 10-round decision in June over Bill Hutchinson (20-3-4, 9 KOs) in Miami.
The promotion for the show has a strange disclaimer suggesting that Broner may not be able to fight on the night. Not only did he come, but he was guided by the well-known trainer Calvin Ford in this event.
Broner has won titles at 130, 135, 140 and 147 pounds. However, he hasn’t met at that level since his January 2019 eight-round loss to Manny Pacquiao.
Cobbs (16-1-1, 10 KOs) signed with King earlier this year. The move was right when he got the fight he wanted out of the gate.
It comes after 20 months without a ring. Cobbs—based in Las Vegas—dethroned former Maurice Hooker (28-3-3, 19 KOs) on Aug. 2022. The fight got him back into the win column following a March 2022 knockout loss to Alexis ‘Lex’ Rocha (24-2, 16 KOs). And it was the last time under his contract with Golden Boy Promotions—anywhere until he got this opportunity.
The number of rounds was not specified during the rating of any promotional item. The only reference to this fight is that it is for the “WBC People’s Championship.”
