AFC Wimbledon stunned Ipswich to stop the Toon tie

The new boys of the Premier League Ipswich they were kicked out of the EFL Cup on penalties by the Second League AFC Wimbledon Wednesday night.

Ali Al-Hamadi put the visitors ahead with a header four minutes into the game against a team that joined the Tractor Boys.

However, Omar Bugiel and Matty Stevens put the hosts ahead only for another header, from Conor Chaplin with four minutes to go, to round up the penalties.

Dons goalkeeper Owen Goodman was the hero with saves from Jack Taylor and Omari Hutchinson to send his side through to the third round.

They will face each other next Newcastle who also needed penalties to progress to the Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest in a game that saw Sandro Tonali return from a 10-month ban for gambling by playing the first hour.

Joe Willock put the visitors ahead after 18 seconds but was injured shortly afterwards and Jota Silva’s second-half goal came off the post to send the tie to kick-off.

Ibrahim Sangare and Taiwo Awoniyi missed for the hosts allowing Sean Longstaff to score for the Magpies.

More VAR drama for the Cherries

Bournemouth they are left to cry about VAR again as they have disappointed of late West Ham.

With only two minutes left in the penalty shootout, Mohammed Kudus’ shot deflected off Jarrod Bowen and past Neto in the Bournemouth goal.

The Bournemouth staff – who saw another potential winner against Newcastle on Sunday after VAR ruled out – believe the ball went to Bowen’s arm, but with no VAR in the EFL Cup, the goal stood.

Ivan Toney was not on the team though Brentford they joined the Hammers in the third round after finishing Colchester 1-0 away thanks to a Keane Lewis-Potter strike at the break Wolves it passed easily Burnley at Molineux thanks to goals either side of the break from Goncalo Guedes.

Southampton got their shooting boots back after two goalless runs in the Premier League with a 5-3 win Cardiff.

Mateus Fernandes and Samuel Amo-Ameyaw put the visitors 2-1 up but Ronnie Edwards’ goal after the break leveled the scores and although Cameron Archer made it 3-2, Alex Robertson equalized for the Bluebirds soon after.

As penalties awaited, James Bree won for Saints in stoppage time and there was still time for Archer to grab the second in the dying seconds.

Richard Kone also scored one goal in Wales Wycombe Hello Swansea on the road in another Wednesday game to book a home game against Aston Villa.

Third round draw

Liverpool will host West Ham, Everton entertain Southampton and Wolves will visit Brighton in their only Premier League game in the third round of the EFL Cup.

League Two Barrow have been handed a dream trip to Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea while Bolton head to Arsenal and League One rivals Barnsley travel to Man United.

Man City host Watford while Tottenham head to Coventry and after causing chaos in the second round, AFC Wimbledon host Newcastle and Wycombe host Aston Villa.
