Alex Song admits he left Arsenal for more money at Barcelona

Former Arsenal midfielder Alex Song has revealed that he left the club to join Barcelona to become a millionaire.

The midfielder admitted that his trade was for money, he joined the Spanish team because he knew he would not play regularly.

At that time, Barcelona had players like Sergio Busquets, Andre Iniesta, and Xavi Hernandez. But they wanted to add more depth in the middle of the park, and submitted a £15 million offer to sign the Arsenal midfielder as a backup.

Although he was a key player for Arsenal at the time, the midfielder decided to move on and join Barcelona as a club player in order to earn more money. Apparently, the midfielder was earning around £70,000 a week at Barcelona when he joined the club in 2012.

Song revealed that he wanted a comfortable and secure life for his family once his career was over and therefore decided to accept a lucrative offer from Barcelona. The director of Barcelona at the time informed the player that he would not be a regular starter for the team, but he had no doubts about joining.

He said in the Mirror: “When Barcelona offered me a contract, I saw how much I was going to earn, I didn’t think twice.

“I felt that my wife and children should have a comfortable life when my work is over. I met with the sporting director of Barca, he told me that I wouldn’t be able to play more games, but I didn’t agree*** – I knew that now I’m going to be a millionaire.”

His comments will seem disappointing to Arsenal fans who have rated him highly during his time at the club. He was a key player under Arsene Wenger and staying at the north London club could see him tap into his true potential.
