Arne Slot explains how Liverpool are hoping to get ‘consensus’ from Darwin Nunez
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has explained that there are two things he hopes will improve consistency in up-and-coming striker Darwin Nunez.
Nunez scored the Reds’ third goal as they made light work of Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon. It was the £85m man’s first goal of the season and only his second in the competition since the start of March after a drought that ended 2023/24.
Nunez showed what he can do in a Liverpool shirt, scoring 18 goals in all competitions last season. But he has also often frustrated fans since arriving in 2022 by failing to consistently produce top-quality moments.
Slot suggests that it is not only down to the player to benefit himself, but the whole team.
“I think you get consistency from two things – you get it from the amount of work you do and you get it from team work,” the Liverpool manager explained following Saturday’s win.
“If the teamwork is not consistent, it is very difficult for a person not to change. We just have to do our habits every day in the training field and in the games to find this harmony. Because when you work on your habits. , you create harmony.
“That’s what we try to do every day and he showed a good game today maybe he can show on Wednesday [against West Ham in the Carabao Cup]but let’s wait and see.”
Liverpool were already 2-0 up in the first half when Nunez scored his goal against Bournemouth, firing from the corner of the penalty area with his left foot.
Slot continued to admit that he did not want the Uruguayan to shoot at that time.
“My first instinct when he shot, I said, ‘Why is he shooting? Why don’t you keep dribbling?’ Because he made the ball loose and I think the defender was down,” admitted Slot.
“But then it was half a second later when I saw the ball come off the post and I said, ‘Okay, maybe he’s a better footballer than ever!’ It’s a good choice.”
