Arne Slot throws a strategy over the plans of the stadium in the middle of Martin Zubimendi’s discussions

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has admitted he is still ‘constantly assessing’ his midfielders amid the club’s interest in Martin Zubimendi.

The Reds are yet to sign players since Slot was appointed as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement, although they are eyeing a deal to sign Euro 2024 winner Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.

During pre-season, Slot tasked Liverpool with playing at a slower tempo than Klopp’s trademark high-intensity, and rotating his way through several senior midfielders to find the right combination.

After friendlies against La Liga duo Sevilla and Las Palmas on Sunday, Slot was asked if he had ‘a better idea’ of who would start in their midfield.

Sometimes that affected the players we had, which I have tried,” he explained. “I think we saw a lot of Wata Endo there or Ryan [Gravenberch]. And in the last game even Dominik [Szoboszlai] it was a little lower.

“But I have a good idea which player fits there, right now in my opinion, the best.

“But as I said, we only have one week to work together with other players. So, sometimes you feel like, ‘Oh, this is the best No.6’ but the combination with the other two may not work well. It doesn’t mean that those who played today will play next week or the following weeks.

“We are in a situation where we always evaluate which team is the best for us, which is the best team. And today you saw this but it doesn’t mean it will be the same as next week.”

Slot was also asked to review the transfer, and he replied: “I think as a team like us, we are always looking to strengthen the team.

“But it is not that easy to strengthen the squad if you see both games today, I have said many times that I have inherited a strong team and if we can and if we think it is possible, we will strengthen the squad. But only if we think we can and if possible. “
