Improved Champions League format

This season, the Champions League has evolved significantly, from the 32-team format to eight teams of four. Instead, a single table of 36 teams, called the ‘league division,’ was introduced.

Important changes in format

One league table: 36 teams are now placed in one table. Each club will play eight different opponents, four at home and four away, rather than facing three twice in the group stage.

Planting and painting process: The teams are sorted into four seeding pots, with each club drawn to play two opponents in each pot, one at home and one away.

Eligibility for knockout rounds:

  • The top eight teams from the league stage will advance to the last 16.
  • Teams ranked 9th to 24th will compete in a two-legged qualifying round for the remaining last 16 places.
  • Teams finishing in 25th place or below will be completely eliminated from European competition, without promotion to the Europa League.

Knockout Rounds: From the last 16 stage onwards, the tournament will continue with the traditional knockout rounds.
