Arsenal have made an appeal to sign the Brentford star

Premier League legend Alan Shearer believes Arsenal could do with signing a new striker this summer, naming Ivan Toney as a potential £40million option.

However, Shearer seems to think that Mikel Arteta has said that the Gunners will not strengthen the forward as a priority, even if there seems to be a small gap in that position.

Kai Havertz ended last season in fine form and picked up a goal and an assist on the opening weekend of the Premier League, helping Arsenal to a 2-0 win over Wolves at the Emirates Stadium.

It is possible that Arteta has full faith in the Germany international during next season, while Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard could play up front, although Eddie Nketiah has fallen in recent times and looks likely to leave. He has also been linked with Everton by Football Insider.

A ton transfer looks like a huge opportunity for Arsenal

Ivan Toney could be on his way – should Arsenal sign him?

Toney is certainly an option worth considering for Arsenal, especially if he is available on the cheap due to being in the final year of his Brentford contract.

Shearer isn’t sure if Arsenal will make a move for Toney, but he seems to think they could do with reinforcements in that department.

“If it was up to me, I’d look at bringing one in. Listening to Mikel it doesn’t sound like they’re going to bring one in,” Shearer said on The Rest Is Football podcast.

“You are looking for a striker who will improve the statistics of Havertz, Trossard, Saka and what the team did last year. Can they find that player? I don’t see why not.

“I think from Brentford’s point of view they may have sold Ivan Toney. They can’t wait another six months and let him go free.

“I would be surprised if he wanted £15m, I would think he would be more like £40m.”

Gary Lineker also seemed to agree that Toney could be a good signing for Arsenal, so it will be interesting to see if the Gunners can be tempted by the 28-year-old left out of Thomas. Frank’s squad that won yesterday against Crystal Palace.
