Aston Villa are turning to a ‘good’ Chelsea star in their bid to fill a key position

Aston Villa are set to make a move for Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah as they look to add another defender this summer, according to reports.

Villa still have a number of positions on their wishlist, especially given the recent sale of French striker Moussa Diaby to Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad.

The versatile defender is also in the spotlight as Unai Emery looks to strengthen his squad ahead of their Champions League campaign.

Villa have already been linked with Liverpool’s Joe Gomez. However, it now appears that Chelsea’s Chalobah is on their shortlist, too 90 min reports that the Blues will accept an offer in the region of £25-30m.

Chelsea have just completed the sale of Conor Gallagher to Atletico Madrid, while Portugal striker Joao Felix is heading the other way.

And now, they will look to cash in on another home-grown player, with Chalobah – who has played 80 times for Chelsea in all competitions since leaving their academy – reportedly axed from Enzo Maresca’s side.

Chelsea’s unpopular transfer window

Chelsea’s treatment of their home-grown players has come under fire from supporters following another summer of spending sprees.

But fans aren’t the only ones disappointed to see Gallagher and, potentially, Chalobah go.

The legend of Chelsea, John Obi Mikel, also criticized the purchase policy of his old club, and the Nigerian player believes that there was an unnecessary spending of money.

“That’s right, two young boys wearing blue, of course,” said Mikel. “In and out. At the club they were little boys and now we have to sell them to make sure we balance the books.

“Then it got to the point where the owners just spent a lot of money and bought out everyone with a price tag. [them]. Just spending too much money, buying too many players we don’t need.”

Mikel added: “I just think it’s bad business for the owners. Totally bad business for the owners.

“Now, we have lost two amazing players! I think ‘will Chalobah improve the team?’ of course! Hell yeah! Will Conor Gallagher improve the team? Mine, yes.”
