Australia 1-Day 2024/25, NSW vs WA 1st Match Report, September 22, 2024
New South Wales 287 for 9 (Philippe 139, Richardson 5-63). Western Australia 279 (Bancroft 71, Agar 51, Edwards 2-33) by 8 runs
Philippe made the off-season switch from WA to NSW in a bid to revive his Sheffield Shield career. But it was with the white ball that Philippe made some memorable early appearances, with the 27-year-old scoring 139 from 119 balls to lead NSW to 287 for 9 at Cricket Central in Sydney on Sunday.
In reply, three-time defending champions WA had a chance to clinch a win after being bowled out for 279 for 9, needing nine runs from the last eight balls.
But Will Salzmann ended WA’s hopes, making a difficult catch as he raced back towards the sun to dismiss AJ Tye.
Salzmann returned a costly 2 for 72, but had the last laugh by holding the winning game.
Philippe smashes 17 fours and three sixes in his worst knock, a star player especially on the ground, near the deck and above.
Agar, WA’s lone spinner, received plenty of punishment from Philippe en route to 1 for 58 in eight overs. Richardson got the wicket of Philippe in the 38th over with a diving one-handed catch from Bancroft mid-on.
But the damage had already been done, with Philippe’s knock helping NSW post an impressive total despite a lack of support around him.
Matthew Gilkes scored 41 off 47 batting at No.7 to become the next best run-scorer, while off-spinner Tanveer Singh added an unbeaten 26 off 14 balls at the death.
