Australia 1-Day 2024/25, QLD vs SOA 9th Match Report, October 25, 2024
Queensland 223 for 1 (Peirson 100*, Renshaw 72*) bat South Australia 218 (McSweeney 137, Guthrie 4-15, Straker 3-54) by nine wickets
“Personally I’m in a good place with my strategy and the way I run my business and it was great to win,” Peirson told AAP. “I missed the first couple picks for one day and I was gnashing my teeth to get the job done today. It was great to do it.”
Earlier Guthrie bowled the dangerous Jake Fraser-McGurk with an inswinger and his three quick wickets in six overs put the home side on top.
South Australia were 29 for 4 in the 12th over and on the rack. McSweeney received early support from Thomas Kelly in a run of 90 runs for the fifth wicket.
After that, the wickets fell as McSweeney opened a variety of covers with good timing through and into the field as the captain made it seem like he was hitting a different field to his teammates.
“One of the best knocks we’ve seen in one-day cricket,” former Australian batting coach Darren Lehmann commented.
Lehmann wants McSweeney or NSW opener Sam Konstas to partner Khawaja at the top of the order in the Test series against India.
McSweeney will captain the Australia A team against India next week in Mackay. Peirson will join the team for the second game in Melbourne.
He is behind Alex Carey and Josh Inglis in the Australian batting order and is close to national honours.
“George [Bailey] it’s very clear that the way they see things now,” said Peirson. “Alex has been doing Test work, Ingo is behind him and I’m following Ingo. It’s a healthy place to be. I am very clear where I stand. You always push to get closer to playing test cricket.
“Any game for Australia A is a huge honor and there’s no doubt the performances on the board will speak for you. I’m delighted to meet Buddha. [McSweeney] and, a good boy from Queensland.”
