Australian News – Matthew Wade is retiring from international cricket, taking a quick step into coaching

Wade was part of Australia’s T20 World Cup squad in June and the tournament was expected to mark the end of his international career after he was overlooked for the tour of the UK in September. In March he retired from red ball cricket after Tasmania’s run to the Sheffield Shield final.

“I was well aware that my international days were almost over at the end of the last T20 World Cup. My retirement from international and coaching was a constant conversation with George. [Bailey] and Andrew [McDonald] six months ago,” said Wade.

“Coaching has been on my radar for the past few years and thanks to some great opportunities that have come my way, I’m very grateful and excited.”

“As my international career comes to an end, I want to thank all my Australian colleagues, staff and coaches,” he said. “I enjoyed riding the challenges as it can be at the world level. Without good people around me I would never have achieved as much as I did.

“I also thank my family, my mother, father and sister for the many hours they have put in over the years to take me to games and training.

“Last but not least to Julia and the children. I can’t thank them enough for the sacrifices they made so that I could continue to achieve my dreams. There are no words to describe how grateful I am to them, none of this would have happened without their support. .”

Wade’s Test career ended in 2021, on the previous tour of India, after he returned to the team as a specialist batsman for the 2019 Ashes where he scored two hundreds. His last ODI also came in 2021 when he made a brief return to the team after a gap of four years during a tour of the West Indies during the Covid era.

“Congratulations to Matthew on a fantastic international career where his ability and versatility have made him a standout player across all formats,” Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said.

“I am delighted that he will add to his huge fortune by coaching the next generation of stars and continue to light up the Big Bash with the Hobart Hurricanes.”
