Australia’s Test players are rested from the T20Is against Pakistan and the captain will be appointed

Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis and Spencer Johnson have been called up for Australia’s T20I series against Pakistan, with all Test players rested before facing India, but a new captain is yet to be confirmed.
Australia’s recent T20I captains Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head are absent, as is ODI and Test captain Pat Cummins. Glenn Maxwell, Adam Zampa, Matthew Short and Aaron Hardie are all captains in the BBL and Josh Inglis is also a strong player given his leadership and his intelligence is highly regarded as the vice-captain of the Perth Scorchers.

Bartlett, Ellis and Johnson have all returned from injury following a tough tour of the UK where they were ruled out with various issues. Johnson returned to domestic cricket last Friday when he played in South Australia’s One-Day Cup match against Queensland.

Bartlett (side strain) and Ellis (hamstring) have been slow to recover but are expected to be ready for the three-game series beginning Nov. 14 and ending Nov. 18.

There were no surprises in the 13-man squad with an almost identical squad to the one that toured the UK in September. Maxwell returns to the fold after being rested for the T20I portion of that tour. Short and Jake Fraser-McGurk look set to open the batting, as they will in the ODI series that precedes the T20Is against Pakistan. Fraser-McGurk batted at number 3 in his last T20I when Short opened with Head.

With the series ending four days before the first Test against India in Perth, no major Test players have been made available. Marsh and Head also miss the ODI series while on maternity leave.

However, CA has left the door open for members of the T20I squad to join the Test squad after the series meaning the likes of Inglis and Sean Abbott could still be counted on.

“Any members of the T20 squad selected for the first Test will join another team after the final match in Hobart,” CA said in a statement.

Australia will have different coaches for the T20I series with head coach Andrew McDonald, batting coach Michael Di Venuto and bowling coach Daniel Vettori all having a short break ahead of the Test series.

Assistant coach Andre Borovec will take charge, as he did in Australia’s five-match T20I series against India in India last October. Former Australian batsman Brad Hodge is also set to join the team as an assistant coach after traveling to Australia’s T20 World Cup squad as a coaching consultant in June. Matthew Wade, who is set to retire from international cricket and captain Australia’s T20I team in February, is reportedly set to join the team in a coaching capacity as well.

Australia T20I team vs Pakistan: Sean Abbott, Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa
