Barcelona ‘convinced’ of Federico Chiesa’s transfer despite Liverpool’s interest
Barcelona believe they will beat Liverpool to the signing of Juventus striker Federico Chiesa, according to a report.
Chiesa is not in Juventus’ plans for the 2024/25 season and has been given permission to leave before the transfer deadline.
Although Juve were willing to sell him at a reduced price, Chiesa was unable to garner significant interest until the window.
Last week, Barcelona emerged as a possible destination for the 26-year-old, while Liverpool’s interest was made public on Monday night.
According to the Catalan outlet SPORTSBarca think they will win the race for Chiesa as long as they can ‘overcome the bureaucratic hurdles’. They have just managed to sign summer signing Dani Olmo from La Liga, and that comes as Andreas Christensen has been ruled out after a long-term injury.
Barcelona will need to clear some wages in order to sign the new player, but if they can do that, the club believe Chiesa will accept his offer rather than move to Liverpool. The report suggests the Italian international is leaning towards moving to Catalonia instead of Merseyside anyway.
Club president Joan Laporta is also hoping to seal a new deal with Nike this week that will ease their concerns and allow more flexibility when it comes to La Liga’s financial rules. Barcelona are among the very few clubs under Nike yet to release a third kit for the 2024/25 season, and their away strip has been leaked but never officially launched.
Olmo and 22-year-old striker Pau Victor remain Barcelona’s only signings so far this summer. Liverpool are yet to add to their squad this season, although there is an agreement to sign Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamadashvili from 2025.
