Barcelona received a new blow with the injury of Dani Olmo

Spain have recalled Dani Olmo back to Barcelona after suffering a knee injury during the 0-0 draw with Serbia.

La Roja’s first game since becoming European champions at Euro 2024 ended goalless, with Luis de la Fuente’s side being relegated in Belgrade on Thursday night.

Towards the end of the second half, Olmo had to be taken off after being hit hard on the knee. It was hoped that he could recover by the time he faces Switzerland on Sunday, but it is now widely reported that the 26-year-old will return to Barca instead.

Although the injury is believed to be serious, Spain decided it would be better for Olmo to rest than risk further injury.

Barcelona are back in La Liga action next Sunday when they travel to Catalan neighbors Girona, before kicking off their UEFA Champions League campaign away to AS Monaco next Thursday.

Olmo made a good start for Barca, scoring in his first two games – a 2-1 win at Rayo Vallecano where he scored a late winner, and a 7-0 thrashing of Real Valladolid. Barcelona sit at the top after four games.

The club had to offload the injured Andreas Christensen and take Ilkay Gundogan’s salary off the books to sign summer signing Olmo in accordance with La Liga’s strict financial rules.
